Advertising for the Seals
Spreading the Word About the Seal Hunt through Mass Media Ads
Harpseals.org has created billboards and other outdoor advertising, TV and radio commercials, print ads, flash banner ads, and short videos to help spread the word about the plight of the harp seals and how people can help end the seal hunt forever.
Billboards and Other Outdoor Ads
Harpseals.org's billboards are simple, bold, and attention-getting. Our large billboard, measuring 14 ft. x 48 ft., promotes the Canadian seafood boycott, with the text, "Save us. Boycott Canadian seafood."
Our smaller billboard, measuring 10.5 ft. x 36 ft., has a similar design. It says, "Your seafood choice can save me." Both billboards have been displayed around the U.S.; in Philadelphia, PA, and Richmond, VA on I-95; in New Jersey on the NJ Turnpike; in Chicago, IL, Omaha, NE, Miami, FL, and many other cities, on major roads and highways. With our billboards, we have reached millions of Americans.
We have also displayed ads at bus stops near Red Lobster restaurants in Sacramento, CA and put up a wall mural in San Francisco near Fisherman's Wharf. These outdoor ads help us steer people to our website, where they can learn more about the seal hunt and the many ways to help stop this annual massacre forever.
Another Harpseals.org ad campaign specifically targets seafood buyers at the largest seafood expo in the country: the International Boston Seafood Show, where about 17,000 seafood industry buyers and sellers meet to make deals. Atlantic Canadian seafood industry players have a huge presence at this event. Our mobile billboard at this event warns buyers to avoid Canadian seafood.
If you would like to sponsor a billboard or other outdoor ad in your town, please donate today and let us know where you would like us to put up the ad. Outdoor ads can cost anywhere from a few hundred dollars to a few thousand dollars for a one-month display. If you cannot sponsor an ad, you can still help us put up these ads around the U.S. by donating any amount that you can afford.
Television Commercials
Harpseals.org has a poignant 30 second TV commercial in two versions, one with some sealing scenes, and an edited version, which is less graphic. We have aired both commercials in several cities around the U.S., including Los Angeles, CA and Miami, FL, on cable channels such as Animal Planet, Discovery, CNN Headline News, MTV, and Lifetime. The original commercial has been censored by many cable companies, restricted to overnight hours or outright refused as ,too violent'. Judge for yourself.
We also have a creative 30 second TV spot, with a twist. This gem was created by Keith Wisniewski and has been aired in New York, NY on Discovery Channel. Watch all three TV commercials here.
If you would like to sponsor TV commercials in your city, please donate and let us know where you would like us to air the commercials. TV commercials may be purchased in packages valued at $2,000 or more. You can also make a donation of any amount, and we will use it in our continuing advertising campaigns.
Radio Commercials
Harpseals.org has several radio commercials, both professionally recorded and provided as text available for any radio DJ to read. We have 30 and 60 second spots, which explain what is happening to the seals in Canada and how the boycott of Canadian seafood will help end the annual massacre known as the 'seal hunt'. We have aired these commercials in a few cities around the country.
Some radio stations may be willing to air these commercials as Public Service Announcements (PSA's). College radio stations and small community radio stations are most likely to be willing to air these radio spots as PSA's. Please ask your local radio stations to download the Harpseals.org radio spots and air them as PSA's. If they are willing to air our commercials but need them on CD's, please let us know where to send the CD's.
You can also sponsor radio commercials in your town. A donation of $3,000 or more will buy a modest two-week package of radio commercials on a major radio station.
Print Ads
Harpseals.org has print ads for magazines and newspapers, which we have placed in papers and magazines around the U.S., in such cities as Monterey, CA, St. Louis, MO, Dallas, TX, and Los Angeles, CA. We often place these ads in weekly community newspapers. See all our print ads here.
Print ads are a great way to reach people with more information than one can fit on a billboard or even in a TV commercial. With a print ad, the reader has time to mull over the information and let it sink in. We hope our ads will then inspire people to join the boycott, visit Harpseals.org to learn more about the seal hunt, and join the campaign to end it.
If you would like to sponsor an ad in your town, please donate and let us know in which paper or magazine you would like the ad. One ad can be purchased alone; however, it is preferrable to purchase at least two ads, one to two weeks apart. Each ad can cost between $100 and $1000, depending on the size of the ad and the circulation of the paper or magazine.
Some magazines offer remnant space to non-profit organizations for free ads. Please ask the editor or ad department of your favorite magazine to consider offering Harpseals.org remnant space for our ads.
Web Flash Banner Ads
Harpseals.org has two flash banner ads for web sites. One urges viewers to get involved to help save the seals. This small ad directs viewers to the Harpseals.org home page. The other ad urges web surfers to join the Canadian seafood boycott and directs them to our seafood boycott page. You can help the seals by hosting our web banner ads on your own web site. See these ads and get the code you need to host them here.
You can also sponsor these ads on commercial web sites, such as online editions of newspapers, radio station web sites, online pet supply stores, and any other site where caring people surf. Web banner ads can be purchased for as little as $150 per month on a well-trafficked site. If you would like to sponsor a banner ad, please donate and let us know where you would like the ad.
