Seals and the Seal Hunt in the News
In 2003, the Canadian government stunned the world with the announcement that it would allow the killing of almost one million seals over three years. In fact, over one million seal pups were killed from 2003 to 2005,
Since then, hundreds of thousands more seal pups have been killed. In some years, the numbers killed have been less than 250,000 due to mass drownings prior to the hunt and to the high costs of sealing and poor returns, which generated little interest on the part of sealers.
The media has reported on anti-sealing efforts around the world, including protests, efforts to ban seal product imports, and a U.S. Congressional resolution.
