Our
unique "Seal Talk" bulletin is always interesting...
This spring's seal hunt and activities on the ice floes fired up the
masses... and our bulletin attendance has continued to expand since
then.
Check out the commentary and opposing viewpoints and join in the discussions...
All opinions on both sides of the seal hunt issue are valued in a
non-biased forum. |

"One
must factor in the cultural, political, and philosophical viewpoints
of the people that accept and promote it."
|
When it comes to understanding the reasons and justifications
for the annual Canadian Harp seal slaughter, the short answer of "it's
for their pelts" can remain unchallenged...
Upon further examination, however, it seems the true depths of the roots
of the killing go far beyond that simple explanation.
On a superficial level, most people around the world reject the reasoning
behind the blatant and ugly truths surrounding the annual slaughter of the
Harp seals.
Painfully obvious to most people of the world as being overtly cruel, wasteful,
and just plain "wrong" on so many levels, polls show that the
majority of Canadian citizens oppose the yearly slaughter, (with the exception
of the Maritimes provinces), yet it continues nonetheless.

So
why does it continue?
|
So why and how does it keep on happening year after year?
With the hunt enjoying its highest kill quotas in history, its a sad but
true fact that only a small percentage of Canada's overall population benefits
from the killing- while the rest of the people and the reputation of Canada
itself suffers the embarrasment, disapproval, and economic beating that
comes with it.
It is indeed a cultural phenomenon worth exploring, if for no other reason
than its unique character.
Why DOES it go on? That does indeed seem to be the 64,000 seal question...
The fact of the
matter is that upon taking a more in-depth look at the reasons behind
it, one must factor in the cultural, POLITICAL, and philosophical viewpoints
of the people that accept and promote it.
THE
PROPAGANDA STARTS HERE:
The
arm of the Canadian government which runs and regulates both the annual
Harp seal "Hunt" and the fisheries (fishing grounds) of Canada
is called the DFO, which stands for Department of Fisheries & Oceans.
THE
DFO IS THE GOVERNING BODY WHICH FOR MANY YEARS CHOSE TO LINK THE DECLINE OF THE COD
FISHERY TO THE SEALS, DESPITE THE MOUNDS OF EVIDENCE SHOWING THE CONTRARY.
(It's a classic example of propaganda.)

Jean
Chretien: "These damn seal lovers are really getting to be
a pain in my ass, George..."
(Parady quote by harpseals.org)

excellent overview of the cod/ seal relationship
(Webpage and assorted links and articles: Harp seals and Atlantic
Cod: Notes for a presentation to the Standing Committee on Fisheries and
Oceans, House of Commons, Ottawa by David M. Lavigne, PhD., International
Marine Mammal Association)
For
those who still may not understand, we'll try and make it more clear.
The goal of the Canadian propaganda for many years was as follows: Convince the public
that the Harp seal is the reason for the recent and tragic collapse of
the cod fishery of the eastern seaboard.
WHY DO THIS?
Because the real reason for the collapse of the
cod fishery, OVERFISHING THE PAST 50 YEARS, is completely unacceptable
to admit! By blaming the seals the government that
so miserably failed to properly manage or regulate the fishery (evident
by its present state of fragility), deflects the finger pointing away
from the ("corrupt"?) officials in charge of regulating Canada's
resources and gets them the votes and support they need from the fishing
community in order to be re-elected. (the hand that feeds...)

A
QUESTION
TO PONDER
|
|
THE
CANADIAN DEPARTMENT OF FISHERIES AND OCEANS POSES THIS INTRIGUING
SCIENCE QUESTION:
ARE SEALS FISH?

for the fascinating answer.)
|
Another
way of describing this phenomenon might be: "political positioning"...
Put another way,
after years of overfishing and systematic exploitation of its resources,
Canada's government used the harp seals as a scapegoat and blamed
them for destroying their cod fishery.
(a fact proven untrue year after year by biologists not on the government
payroll.) In this way, the local politicians could keep their voter base happy
(sealers are fisherman and crabbers when they're not sealing) and voting
for them.
Rather than
find alternative livelihoods for unemployed people in economically depressed
areas, the politicians give them the seals, as though seals were renewable
resources, and as though sacrificing them is a socially responsible action
to provide gainful employment.
For ANYONE studying the subject, (except for
those paid to produce pre-determined "science" results) this
propaganda regarding the "seals eating all the cod" is a complete
farce. (and yet effective due to the amount of energy and money
put forth by the government into the deception).
Note:
To be fair to the DFO, we are happy to divulge an important update regarding
their official position: Just prior to the commencement
of the 2005 seal hunt, EVEN THE DFO STARTED REFUTING ITS OWN PREVIOUS
PROPAGANDA LINE AND ANNOUNCED THAT THE HARP SEALS DIDN'T CAUSE THE COLLAPSE
OF THE COD FISHERY!
(yes, its true... although hard to locate and constantly changing
locations on their website, they will now reluctantly state this un-arguable
fact on an "as needed" basis to appease powerful scientists
or a hungry media in times of political necessity)...
They stil, until very recently scapegoated the seals for the failure of the cod population to recover after the moratorium on cod fishing was established years ago. Now they are finally admitting, at least in small print on their web site, that the seals may not be to blame for this.
...but the damage is done and, sadly, MOST SEALERS
STILL BELIEVE IT!
The truth of the matter is that healthy populations of cod need healthy
populations of seals. That's
the way an ECOSYSTEM works.
Want to go deeper?
Research
the Parliamentary report entitled: "World Fisheries: The current
Crises" (For those interested, here's a detailed report prepared
by Alan Nixon of the Science and Technology Division January 1997. Not
light reading, but the truth never is...)
The key
players in charge of the propaganda are:
FISHERIES
AND OCEANS CANADA-
(Official
website of the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, Canada).
OFFICE
OF THE PRIME MINISTER OF CANADA-
(Official
website of Paul Martin, Prime Minister of Canada)
And
of course let's not forget about our good friends at the now defunct
CANADIAN SEALERS ASSOCIATION-
The Canadian Sealers Association's motto was "A Bright New Future
for a Traditional Industry". Not an official government entity, but
working under the direct supervision of the DFO, it has since gone out
of business. (what a pity...)
"REVERSE"
CANADIAN TOURISM:
Why
not start a propaganda campaign of our own and smear the Canadian flag with
the blood of the seals... In addition to boycotting
all seafood from Canada, we urge you to make the link of killing baby
seals to travel and tourism to Canada and to tell the government about it!
Target:
CANADIAN TOURISM EXCHANGE (CTC)
Purpose of the CTC:
*The CTC's
business is to promote tourism to Canada. It's government-sponsored and
corporate-fed. Most noteable is their motto- "Discover our True Nature"....
So, Harpseals.org suggests you do just that! Tell them you're not going
to travel to or buy Canadian products as long as the senseless seal hunt
continues.

THE
HUNT EASILY TRANSCENDS MOST TRADITIONAL ANTI/ PRO-HUNTING ARGUMENTS
It also goes far beyond animal lovers and conservationists"
vs. "developers and resource extractors" issues.
The sad truth of the matter is that the annual slaughter of the harp seals
comes down to a cultural phenomenon of dubious "tradition"
mixed with the fear and closed-mindedness of a public duped by continuous
and copious amounts of government-produced propaganda (see above notes)
to propagate the fear. It's an insane circle of death and illogical actions.
ANNE OF GREEN
GABLES & THE BABY SEALS
The Canadian Province of Prince Edward Island is primarily
noted for four things. The most famous of these is an author named Lucy
Maud Montgomery and her books about Anne Shirley – better known as "Anne
of Green Gables."

Anne
Shirley is
one of the most famous Canadians known in Japan
|
Anne Shirley is one of the most famous Canadians known in Japan. The Japanese
love her and every year, thousands of Japanese travel to the island Province
of Prince Edward Island to see Green Gables, the home of Anne. Actually
it is the home of Lucy Maud Montgomery but those who visit it envision Anne,
and not Lucy when they tour Green Gables. In Japan, the book is entitled
Akage no An.
The second thing that Prince Edward Island is famous for is that it is the
birthplace of the nation of Canada. It was in Charlottetown on July 1st,
1867 that Canada became a country.
The third thing that Prince Edward Island is noted for is potatoes. The
rich red soil of the island situated in the Gulf of St. Lawrence is the
source of potatoes sold throughout the world.
The fourth thing that Prince Edward Island is famous for is not so romantic
as Anne and not so tasty as the potatoes. It is a horrid thing, a bloody,
nightmarish, cruel, and evil thing and that is the annual slaughter of beautiful,
doe-eyed baby harp seals.
Read more about Anne of Green Gables and her
connection with the seal slaughter.
Another topic of great interest both as a political issue and an ecological issue is the incredible
Incompetence of the Canadian Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO)
