Denver, CO (PETA) February 6, 2005 -

PETA’s new billboard, showing an actual photo of a seal pup looking up helplessly at a hunter who is about to club her to death and carrying the tagline "Fur—A Killer Look. Wear Any Fur, Share the Blame," has just gone up in Denver.

The ad, which was rejected in several markets across the country, aims to remind Denver residents that by purchasing any fur, they are supporting the largest slaughter of baby harp seals in half a century.

The billboard is located at the intersection of Santa Fe and Third.

Why is fur a cruel anachronism? The sealing industry says that it is killing more seals because of an increase in demand for all fur. Shoppers who purchase coats made of mink or fox fur or jackets trimmed in coyote or rabbit fur share responsibility for creating an environment of demand for the furs of these baby seals, who are clubbed and skinned, sometimes while they are still conscious. While indignation over the recent revival of the mass slaughter of baby seals in Canada sounded around the world, the fact is that those who sell, design, buy, or wear fur—any fur—are to blame.

Other animals trapped for fur suffer excruciating pain, often for days, before their chests are stomped on or their necks are broken by trappers. Beavers caught in underwater traps struggle frantically before drowning. On fur farms, animals spend their entire lives in tiny, filthy cages, where they suffer physical and psychological distress before being killed by poisoning, gassing, anal electrocution, or neck-breaking.

PETA recently revealed abuses found during an undercover investigation at a Michigan fur farm, including chinchillas who suffered neck-breaking and painful electrocution in which clips were attached to their bodies and plugged directly into an outlet, causing them to writhe in agony.

"In the 21st century, people can choose to dress as if they have a heart and soul," says PETA President Ingrid E. Newkirk. "With so many fashionable, comfortable fur alternatives available, everyone can stay warm and ‘dress to kill’ without killing any animals."
