AN ECONOMIC
EXAMINATION |
|
Study after study by independent, unbiased researchers, (not paid by the government to produce pre-determined results) have concluded that the hunt is NOT ECONOMICALLY VIABLE. In fact, results show that the hunt makes no sense from an economic standpoint. (proven, of course, on an annual basis by the government's subsidies paid to the sealing industry in order for it to exist in the first place!) SEALING REVENUE DECLINES WHILE CRUELTY MOUNTS (Ottowa, June 17th, 2003) Article - IFAW A report analysing the subsidies, expenditures and incomes associated with Atlantic Canada's sealing industry- (Report- June 2001, (CIBE) Canadian Institute for Business and the Environment: Providing one of the most complete overviews of the economics of the seal hunt and seal product processing in Newfoundland and Labrador, and the Gaspé region of Quebec. Even though the report provides "minimum estimates", the total includes hundreds of thousands of dollars in "soft" loans to processing plants, which defaulted when their businesses failed. The chief finding of the report was that the high subsidies have failed to create a viable industry capable of standing on its own.) Is it worth the cost? (Article- IFAW: Sealing industry representatives continue to promote the myth that the commercial seal hunt is vital to the economic survival of their province.) |
