A QUESTION
TO PONDER
THE CANADIAN DEPARTMENT OF FISHERIES AND OCEANS POSES THIS INTRIGUING SCIENCE QUESTION:

ARE SEALS FISH?

(Click here for the fascinating answer.)
Note: All positions can be performed from anywhere in the U.S., unless otherwise noted.

Ongoing Positions

Volunteer Coordinators: Be the catalyst that inspires action for the seals all over the country, and even around the world! If you are a highly organized, personable motivator, this is the position for you. It requires at least 5 hours per week, preferrably 10+.
Interested? Email us.

Secretary: Are you very organized? Do you have good writing skills? Our Secretary does more than take minutes at meetings. He/she writes letters to our supporters/donors and to VIP's who can help save the seals. This position requires about 2-3 hours per week and some computer skills (email, word processing, spreadsheets). Interested? Email us.

PSA Director : Harpseals.org has several ads that we use to educate the public about the seal campaign. We purchase paid ads to the extent that our budget allows, but we also try to get free ads (Public Service Announcements). The PSA Director will spearhead this effort by writing letters and sending our Multimedia CD to magazine editors, radio stations, and community TV stations asking them to use our ads as PSA's. The PSA Director may also work with activists with public access cable stations that accept media only from locals. This position requires 3 hours or more per week as well as computer skills (email, word processing, spreadsheets) and the ability to make long distance calls. Interested? Email us.

Kids4Seals Project Managers: If you have a knack for getting kids revved up about volunteering, if you're creative and have a good understanding of kids ages 8-18, you can be a seal superhero! Project Managers will develop great projects for kids and work with our Kids4Seals Program Manager to promote them on the Kids4Seals website. This volunteer position will require about 5 hours/week for the duration of the project. Interested? Email us.

Sales Manager: This position is available to a volunteer in the Los Angeles area. This very important position involves order processing and fulfillment. If you have some computer skills (including email, using control panels/back ends) and are very organized, and if you can make trips to the post office, you may be the seal superhero that we're looking for! This position requires about 5-10 hours per week. Interested? Email us.

PR Person : We are looking for a very creative person to help us get publicity/earned media for the seals. The skills we seek are the ability to come up with ideas that generate headlines, writing skills (for press releases), networking skills (with the media), and basic computer skills (emailing). If this is up your alley, please contact us!

Mail Administrator: This position is for a volunteer in Long Beach, CA. We are looking for a responsible, organized person to handle our mail. This volunteer position takes about 3 hours per week, and involves the use of spreadsheets and email. If you can help us with this vital work, please contact us!

Boycott Recruitment Committee Chair : When we get stores and restaurants to join the Canadian seafood boycott, we bring this campaign closer and closer to a successful end. Be a key part of our victory! We need a well-organized person to guide, coordinate, and encourage volunteers in recruiting stores and restaurants to the Canadian seafood boycott. This requires the use of email and long distance phone calls. If you can dedicate 5-10 hours a week to this effort, please contact us.

Boycott Recruiters : We need great salespeople for these crucial volunteer positions. Boycott Recruiters go to restaurants and talk to the chefs and managers, asking them to avoid Canadian seafood and join the boycott. We have a Boycott Recruitment Kit which provides guidance and resources for recruiters. This is a great way to contribute to stopping the seal slaughter and requires 3 or more hours per week to make this worthwhile. If you are interested in being a Restaurant Recruiter, please contact us.

Outreach Committee Vice-Chair and Team Members: Our Outreach Committee Chair, Robb Mead, needs help as we expand our tabling efforts nationwide. We are now looking for a well-organized person to guide, coordinate, and encourage volunteers in setting up information booths at festivals and other venues in key cities across the country and for Team Members to organize these outreach events in their cities. The Vice-Chair position requires good computer skills and long distance phone calls. The Team Members should have good people skills and be able to develop a core group of activists to do outreach on a regular basis in their cities. If you can dedicate 5-10 hours a week to the Vice-Chair work or about 10 hours every other week as a Team Member, please contact us.

Director of Fundraising : If you are skilled at raising funds, primarily by soliciting donations from philanthropists, we need your help. Please contact us if you can dedicate at least 5 hours per week to this effort.

Short-term Projects

Present information or lessons on the harp seal slaughter to students and civic groups. We'll supply the materials, you supply a strong delivery. You can do this once or hundreds of times, as your schedule allows. If you are a teacher and would like to present these lessons to your students, please order them today (free, of course!) Interested? Email us.

Ebay Sales Coordinator: This position involves managing sales of donated items on Ebay. If you are responsible and experienced with Ebay sales, and if you are able to make trips to the post office, we need you! This position requires about 2-4 hours per item sold. Interested? Email us.

Project Easy Switch Team : Help us fill our Project Easy Switch database with seafood wholesalers and distributors from around the country that supply alternatives to Canadian seafood.
