Resources that you can use in your work

We have some photos of seals and sealing. If you want to use any of them, include the copyright information, and get permission from the creator.

We recommend contacting HSUS or IFAW if you wish to obtain other photos or video clips.

Otherwise, if you do not receive permission to use these photos from their creators, consider the issues pertaining to 'fair use' as summarized below.

If you send us an entry that uses media without permissions, and we do not believe that it would pass the Fair Use tests, we may seek to obtain permissions ourselves, or we may exclude your entry from the contest.

Here is some information from Wikipedia on the Fair Use doctrine.

The key issues in determining whether any use of copyrighted material is considered fair use are

  • the purpose and character of the use, including whether such use is of a commercial nature or is for non-profit educational purposes
  • the nature of the copyrighted work
  • the amount and substantiality of the portion used in relation to the copyrighted work as a whole
  • the effect of the use upon the potential market for or value of the copyrighted work

Here is further information on another angle of fair use, 'transformative use', that resulted from a Supreme Court case.

How your entry will be judged

Judging will be based on the following criteria:

  • Power to inspire action for seals
  • Usefulness for the campaign
  • Creativity
  • Accuracy
