Dear [Decision Maker]
Message: [Edit below] I understand that Wal-Mart is concerned with the sustainability of the seafood it sells. I commend the efforts of Wal-Mart in this regard. However, one important aspect of the sustainability of seafood is the overall manner in which governments manage ocean ecosystems, including the marine mammals who are key figures in these ecosystems. Unfortunately, the government of Canada has been mismanaging the oceans in its care. This government has allowed over-fishing of the North Atlantic cod until the fishery collapsed. It then blamed the seals for its own transgressions. Today, the Canadian government, under pressure from the Canadian fishing industry, continues to mismanage the oceans. It continues to allow factory trawlers to destroy ocean life faster than it can be replenished. Furthermore, it continues to allow and promote the massacre of seal pups. This brutal massacre, which has been condemned by European nations, the U.S. Congress, the Mexican government, and millions of people around the world, is an effort to placate a fishing industry that refuses to acknowledge its own guilt in wiping out life in the oceans. In an effort to force the Canadian government to reform its policies of ocean ecosystem and fisheries management, I urge you to join the Canadian seafood boycott. This boycott will put pressure on the Canadian fishing industry to stop promoting the bloody massacre of baby harp seals. By joining the boycott of all Canadian seafood, Wal-Mart will show Americans and the world that it cares about the plight of these defenseless seals, that it is concerned about the Canadian mismanagement of the ocean ecosystem, and that it is a good corporate citizen. Please do not delay. Yet another massacre is being planned today.
