Where does the seafood come from? (No indication whether 'the Atlantic' includes Canada.) Earlier this year on their website on the FAQ page (after Oven Poppers contacted us, upset about being on our website): Where does the seafood come from? (Note they didn't answer their own question regarding warm and cold water shrimp... and still no indication whether 'the Atlantic' includes Canada.) Currently on their website (as of 6/07) on the FAQ page: Where does the seafood come from? In emails from Oven Poppers to Harpseals.org, the Oven Poppers CEO, Stacey Blake, stated: The fact is that Oven Poppers purchases ALL of it's Sole and Flounder products from Alaska. We do not purchase any Sole, Flounder or Shrimp from Canada. A review of our website and our ingredient listing will support this. The only seafood that we have ever purchased from Canada has been frozen lobster, and the last time I checked, Canadian Lobstermen were not involved in the killing of Canadian Seals. And in a later email, after this confession of selling Canadian seafood, Ms. Blake made the following threat (all in bold text) -- we have no idea who "Mr. Shepherd" is: Mr. Shepherd,
I have just discovered Oven Poppers AGAIN on your website. The page has been relocated within the body of your Boycott pages. If you do not confirm the immediate and permanent removal of Oven Poppers products from this page by Tuesday, March 6th, Oven Poppers will commence immediate legal action against your organization for unfair and inaccurate targeting, as we are NOT a product of Canada. And in yet a later email, more confessions: Oven Poppers did stop purchasing most lobster from Canada during the past 15 months due to price. We have utilized and tried warm water lobster and langostino lobster. At the current time we still purchase from suppliers in the US Frozen Maine Lobster and we are at this time examining how much of this product may be from Canada. Our current overall estimate is that of all component seafood purchased in 2006 approximately .005% may come from Canada.
Our previous website statement on our Cod being from the Atlantic was true two years ago. I will have this changed immediately. All of our Cod for the past year has been Alaskan Cod. Our statement on our Salmon being Atlantic is true but all our Salmon is Atlantic Salmon from Chile.
Currently our shrimp is from both Asia and South America. No real assurances here from a company that is supposedly opposed to the seal 'hunt'. There purchasing decisions are based on PRICE. As the boycott succeeds, the price of Canadian seafood will go down. Will they go back to purchasing shrimp and lobster from Canada? If you'd like to cut to the chase, and get a commitment from Oven Poppers to boycott Canadian seafood, write to Ms. Stacey Blake, President and CEO, today.
