Just as there are many different kinds of people, there's also many different
ways of opposing the annual slaughter of baby seals.
Direct Outreach is one of the best ways to educate the public about the seal 'hunt' and how to stop it. Sure, it's not easy to reach hundreds of millions of people this way, but when we reach (thousands) of people, we get what Red Lobster can't get with their prime time TV spots: People's Captivated Interest!
So join us in
Independant thinkers
and self starters are our most cherished activists but all bodies and ideas
are welcome and needed... and may we also suggest: helping seals can be
fun!

Harpseals.org distributed tons of information packets to seafood vendors at the International Boston Seafood Show 2007
RED LOBSTER:
Fact
1: Nearly all sealers are fisherman. Killing seals represents only a small
fraction (on
average, around 5%) of their yearly income. The
rest of the year, they make their money from some part of the fishing industry
and/or their traditional winter off-season unemployment compensation.
Fact 2: The Red Lobster restaurant chain buys more Canadian seafood than
any other corporation on earth. These purchases
DIRECTLY SUPPORT the annual massacre of baby seals by directly supporting
the fishing industry, which promotes, even demands, the seal massacre.
It is for this reason that most seal hunt
opposition groups agree that pressuring this corporation to STOP BUYING
CANADIAN SEAFOOD is a key goal and strategy to ending the tragedy known
as the "seal hunt" once and for all!
The 2 basic ways we are implementing this strategy
are: (not including advertising)
Large "organized" demonstrations | "Guerrilla
demos" and activism: small, effective, adaptable groups

Red
Lobster demonstrations:
The first and largest (so far) round of Red Lobster demonstrations,
organized and spearheaded by the HSUS, took place on June 25th, 2005. Over 90 different restaurant locations were "targeted" by enthusiastic
seal activists and the event was considered a big success in the eyes of
most of the demonstrators involved.
Despite an obvious lack of significant media coverage, the activists handed
out thousands of fliers as well as educating thousands of people about the
plight of the seals and their connection to the Red Lobster chain of restaurants.
On July 30th,
a second round of Red Lobster demonstrations (organized by Harpseals.org),
took place at over 30 locations in 17 different states, and also one in
Canada. Although this second round of activism was smaller in scope
due to the fact that we didn't have the resources, connections or email
lists and activist base to draw from, most activists involved still considered
it a great success.
We had many Red Lobster demonstrations in March 2006, along with demonstrations at Canadian consulates. Please read the report on the 2006 International Day of Action for the Seals.
From these series of events, many lessons were learned and many observations
noted. To us, the largest and most obvious thing we learned is that YOU
DON'T HAVE TO BE A HUGE GROUP TO BE EFFECTIVE!
LARGE
demonstrations are great but...
they do take quite a bit of organizing
That said, if you would like to organize a big demonstration, we will list it here and promote it through our email alerts. Just give us as much notice as possible!
Small,
"Guerilla demos" are key:
These are a great alternative to the larger group actions mentioned above...
Instead of waiting for that "one big event" every few weeks or months,
you can do something NOW!
We recommend
working together like seals!
|
As far as we're concerned,
these smaller but more consistent "guerilla demos" are just as effective
if not MORE so than the larger but more seldomly arranged demonstration events. Usually
involving diverse groups of between 1 and 20 committed activists spreading
the word for the seals, they are quite interesting and rewarding.
If you decide to organize small demonstrations, you will find that turnouts will
steadily increase and that the hardcore "regulars" will become better
and better friends. As long
as the attendees are creative and energized activists, they ALWAYS make
an impact.
In fact, all it takes is just one individual standing outside a Dead Slobster
restaurant or other Canadian seafood selling establishment, grocery store,
etc., handing out boycott leaflets to customers, explaining the "why and how" and engaging
the public. With one small action for an hour a week, you can make a huge difference! To all
you hardcore 'lone seal' activists, we salute you! And if you'd like us to list you here, so that others can find you, please let us know!
