THE CANADIAN DEPARTMENT OF FISHERIES AND OCEANS POSES THIS INTRIGUING SCIENCE QUESTION:
ARE SEALS FISH? (Click here for the fascinating answer.)
At Harpseals.org, we believe in utilizing all the data we can to monitor the progress of the Canadian seafood boycott.
By analyzing the data, we can determine how well we have done and where we need to improve. Then we can focus our efforts in the areas most in need of improvement.
This will enable us to win this campaign faster...and save the seals!
We need your help in making this campaign a success. So please join us in promoting the Canadian seafood boycott.
There are so many ways to help. Here are a few:
1. Talk to friends and colleagues about the Canadian seafood boycott! Hand them a leaflet, and let them know that they can play a key role in saving millions of baby seals. All they need to do is avoid seafood with "Product of Canada" labels in stores (or ask the attendant in the few instances of supermarket seafood without labels), and ask their waiters where the seafood is from in restaurants.
2. Help recruit restaurants and stores (and importers and distributors). We need to get companies that buy seafood to join the Canadian seafood boycott. You can help by calling, writing, emailing, and visiting stores and restaurants, and asking managers and chefs to switch to non-Canadian sources, and help save the seals. Contact us for a Boycott Recruitment Kit, or help by being the Boycott Recruitment Committee Chair.
4. Leaflet and/or protest at our two main targets: Red Lobster restaurants and Publix supermarkets. If you live in an area without these companies, leaflet at any supermarket or restaurant that sells Canadian seafood. All the major supermarket chains currently sell Canadian seafood. We can help you organize a protest and will advertise it on our website. Leafletting is easy. Just stand outside the store or restaurant and hand patrons our leaflet with a short explanation. If you're on private property and are told to leave, you can move to another location, such as a sidewalk. You can also converse with fellow restaurant patrons and store shoppers at any time.
5. Be your own advertisement for the seals. Use your car as a Sealmobile (a mobile billboard!) and/or wear a seal ad with our t-shirts.

Lobsters:
Live exports to the U.S.
80% of Canada's live lobster exports come to U.S. Annual exports by dollar value have been decreasing steadily over the last 3 years, while exports by weight have remained more steady, declining at most 9%, from 2004-2005. Comparing Jan - Aug 2005 to Jan - Aug 2006, exports by dollar value were down about 13%.
Main import states for live lobsters:
STATE (% of exports going to state between Jan and Aug 2006, % change in exports to state from period Jan-Aug 2005 to period Jan-Aug 2006)
MA (56%, -10%)
ME (19%, -6%)
CT (8%, +1%)
NY (3%, -52%)
NJ (3%, -23%)
All other states, if they imported any live lobsters, had decreases in their imports for these two periods, except the following states:
NH (3%, +5.6%)
RI (2%, +30%)
NE (0.03%, +1765%)
Frozen, prepared, preserved
Changes in this market, which is about equal to the live lobster market, are varied, with more large increases in sales than decreases.
Comparing Jan - Aug 2005 to Jan - Aug 2006, imports by dollar value were up about 16%.
Main import states for dead lobsters:
STATE (% of exports going to state between Jan and Aug 2006, % change in exports to state from period Jan-Aug 2005 to period Jan-Aug 2006)
MA (75%, +18%)
FL (7%, +73%)
VA (6%, +196%)
NH (4%, +521%)
CA (4%, +106%)
ME (1%, -93%)
WA (1%, +397%)
Crabs (mostly Snow/Queen):
Comparing Jan - Aug 2005 to Jan - Aug 2006, sales were down about 10%. This is the main species targeted since it's easier to distinguish Canadian crabs from U.S. crabs than Canadian North American lobsters from U.S. North American lobsters.
Main import states for crabs:

Shrimp, Prawns:
Comparing Jan - Aug 2005 to Jan - Aug 2006, more states have increased imports of shrimp from Canada than decreased imports, yet sales are down about 25%.
Main import states for shrimp and prawns:
STATE (% of exports going to state between Jan and Aug 2006, % change in exports to state from period Jan-Aug 2005 to period Jan-Aug 2006)

Salmon:
Comparing Jan - Aug 2005 to Jan - Aug 2006, sales were up overall almost 30%.
Sales were down on smoked salmon (Atlantic, Pacific, and Danube), including fillets, and on prepared and preserved salmon, but up almost 30% on fresh and chilled salmon (Atlantic, Pacific, and Danube, excluding fillets). This is the biggest market. More states increased imports than decreased imports, one state increasing imports by over a factor of 10: Nevada.
Main import states for fresh or chilled salmon:
STATE (% of exports going to state between Jan and Aug 2006, % change in exports to state from period Jan-Aug 2005 to period Jan-Aug 2006)

Herring:
Comparing Jan - Aug 2005 to Jan - Aug 2006, most states with any imports have increased imports of herring from Canada and sales are up about 17%.
Main import states for herring:

Comparing Jan - Aug 2005 to Jan - Aug 2006, most states with any imports have decreased imports of scallops from Canada and sales are down about 11%.
Main import states for scallops:
STATE (% of exports going to state between Jan and Aug 2006, % change in exports to state from period Jan-Aug 2005 to period Jan-Aug 2006)
MA (52%, -42%)
VA (29%,+2,143%)

Our conclusions:
Some progress has been made, particularly with shrimp, snow crabs, and live lobsters, but we must now focus on reducing Canadian lobster, snow crab, shrimp, and scallops imports in Massachusetts, and salmon imports in California. Note: it is possible that the states listed above are not always the final destination for this seafood. Importers in Massachusetts may sell some seafood to retailers in other states. However, this is the best information that we have at this time. We will continue to gather as much data as we can.
If you live in Massachusetts or California (or any states listed above), please get involved in the seal campaign today. Visit our 'how you can help' pages, and contact us for more information/guidance or to volunteer.
