The European Union ban on seal product imports is responsible for saving the lives of hundreds of thousands of defenseless seal pups, pups who would have suffered a horribly cruel death at the hands of Canadian fishermen. Thank you for taking a stand on behalf of these sentient beings who depend on compassionate people to stand up for them. Now, the European Court of Justice has blocked your brave and just legislative efforts. I believe that the Court is in error in making this decision. The claim that the EU ban violates the Inuits' human rights is preposterous. Their subsistence sealing is in no way jeopardized by this ban. Their commercial sealing is even exempt from this ban (which I believe it should not be). The Inuit state that by banning seal product imports, prices for seal pelts have been adversely affected. They claim that this violates the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR). The EU in no way guarantees a strong market for any products in the ECHR. I urge you to fight this lawsuit, brought by a consortium of Inuit sealers, Canadian fishermen/sealers and seal processors, and Norwegian seal processors in the strongest possible way. Thank you.
