Dear [Decision Maker]
Message: [Edit below] I understand that Ahold, in keeping with the Heijn way, strives to 'do the right thing for customers and others whose lives the business touches.' As an Ahold shopper and a concerned citizen, I urge you to do the right thing for the seals whose lives are put in jeopardy by your sales of Canadian seafood. The Canadian government, led by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, is recklessly sponsoring and promoting the wholesale slaughter of hundreds of thousands of seal pups, mostly harp seal pups. This species is already in jeopardy as a result of global warming. Tens to hundreds of thousands of pups have died from drowning in recent years. Now it is showing additional signs of distress as more and more harp seals are straying south and being found ill by U.S. rescue groups. The Canadian seafood boycott targets the culprits of the annual massacare of seals in Canada since the sealers are off-season fishermen; and the Canadian fishing industry continually demands increased sealing quotas regardless of the implications. By boycotting Canadian seafood, Ahold will show Americans that it cares about the plight of these defenseless seals, that it is concerned about the Canadian mismanagement of the ocean ecosystem, and that it is a good corporate citizen. Please do not delay. This annual massacre must end now.
